How to Make Your Own Pre-lit Christmas Tree

How to Make Your Own Pre-lit Christmas Tree

  • Do you hate stringing lights on the Christmas tree each year?
  • Would you like to cut down the amount of time spent on putting up your Christmas tree?
  • Have you thought about purchasing a new Christmas tree because the one you have is not pre-lit?
  • Have the lights on your “pre-lit Christmas tree” begun to go out?
  • Do you cringe at the idea of having to buy a new Christmas tree when you already have a perfectly good tree?

If you answered “YES” to all of these questions, then read on!

I was in this boat last year. We bought our tree several years ago and got it for a great price. Early on, I didn’t mind stringing lights on the tree and spending a lot of time on decorating. As life got more hectic, taking the time to string lights on the tree was becoming a bigger chore. Sure, I can just buy a new pre-lit Christmas tree. But, we already have a perfectly good tree that we love. Why spend more money when we already have something that works? So, I decided to make our plain Christmas tree, a pre-lit Christmas tree!

I did this after last Christmas when we were taking down our decorations. And I completely forgot that I did it! I was so happy when I opened up the bag this year and found the lights on the tree! Because the work was done last Christmas, putting up & decorating our Christmas tree took about a half an hour!

If you are not interested in buying a new tree but would like a pre-lit Christmas tree, follow these steps to make your own. It will take some time to complete, but is so worth it!

Steps to turn your plain Christmas tree into a pre-lit tree:
*the pictures were taken after I put up the tree. Hopefully you get an idea of how it was done from the images.

  1. Purchase enough tree lights as you will need to wrap your tree. You will need more than you would if you were just placing lights around your tree.
  2. Starting with the top section of the tree, start wrapping the lights around branches ensuring that the socket end of the lights is at the very top. You will need to have the socket open to plug in your tree topper.
  3. Continue wrapping the string of lights around and through each branch of the tree.
  4. Make sure to leave several inches of string where the plug is in order for it to reach the socket of the next string of lights on the next tree section. Your branches should have string twisted around and will look something like this:
  5. Repeat steps 2 – 4 with the next section of your tree.
  6. If you have a tall tree with more sections, continue repeating the steps until you reach the bottom.
  7. Enjoy your pre-lit Christmas tree!
